Getting Help for Opioid Addiction

According to the most recent federal estimate, nearly 21 million Americans over the age of 12 have a substance abuse problem. Overdoses from illegal substance use are now the leading cause of death in Americans under 50.  The real tragedy is that substance abuse is a treatable illness that can be overcome.

Opioid addiction, a form of substance abuse, is currently one of the most common and addictive forms of substance abuse.  Opioid’s which includes morphine, codeine and heroin, are often found in prescription pain medications. The problem for many with an opioid dependency is that their addiction started after receiving a legitimate pain prescription from a trusted physician.  For some, it could be post-surgery or to help cope with a condition that brought about chronic pain. Patients are prescribed opioids to treat pain and become hooked before their initial prescription even runs out.

After a doctor stops prescribing opioid pain medications, a person may seek out other ways to obtain prescription pain pills, or in extreme cases may even move on to using morphine or heroin. As prescription drugs become more difficult to obtain, heroin becomes an easier and less expensive drug to use.

Opioid addiction can be very difficult to treat. Often, patients experience physical discomfort from the withdrawals, making it harder to focus on treatment.  In some cases, individuals experience “protracted withdrawal” which means withdrawal symptoms last longer than those of other addicts.  Even after a period of detoxing and a treatment stay, there is still danger. Many of the overdoses from opioid abuse occur when an addict relapses and assumes they can handle the same dose of a drug as they did before treatment.  However, in this case, that same amount results in an overdose.

Rimrock treats a wide range of substance abuse disorders, including opioid addiction. Our inpatient treatment program is customized to meet the patients’ need. This includes a variety of therapies, family interaction, counseling and more. You can contact Rimrock today to learn more about our inpatient program for substance abuse.
